WHEN APPLYING TO A GIFTED/HIGH ABILITY
OR HIGHLY GIFTED MAGNET,
THESE INSTRUCTIONS MUST BE FOLLOWED
Applicants to gifted/high ability schools/centers must be verified as meeting
one of the following criteria
prior to Friday, December 18, 2009.
A. Demonstrate the ability to meet ALL FOUR of these critical thinking and problem
solving skills in their primary language:
- Explain meanings or relationships among facts, information
or concepts that demonstrate depth and complexity;
- Formulate new ideas or solutions and elaborate on the information;
- Use alternative methods in approaching new or unfamiliar
mathematical problems; and
- Use extensive vocabulary easily and accurately to express
creative ideas
Your child's teacher and the principal of the school your child is currently attending
will determine if your child meets all four characteristics.
OR
B. Have percentile scores
of 85% or above on standardized norm-referenced tests in both total reading and
total math. For the California Standards Test, scaled scores must be as follows:
- A scaled score
of 425 or above in English-Language Arts grades 2-11
and
- A scaled score
of 450 or above in mathematics, grades 2-7
or
- A scaled score of 450 or
above in one of the following: Algebra I, II, Geometry, Integrated Math I, II, III,
High School Summative Math.
OR
C. Be
identified as gifted by an LAUSD school psychologist in the intellectual, high achievement
or specific academic ability categories.

Upon receipt of the application, the District will automatically check the applicant's
eligibility through school records.
VERIFICATION FORMS
Verification Forms are required for residents of LAUSD
NOT currently enrolled in an LAUSD school or residents of LAUSD
who are currently enrolled in an independent charter school:
It is the parent’s responsibility to:
- Contact the Gifted/Talented Programs Office, (213) 241-6500, to have the appropriate
verification
form forwarded to the child’s current school.
- Contact the child’s current school to give permission to release the required
information.
- Confirm the receipt of the verification form with the Gifted/Talented Programs
Office prior to the deadline date of Friday, December 18, 2009 at 5:00 p.m.
No parent request for a verification form is necessary for
residents of LAUSD currently enrolled in an
LAUSD school.

HIGHLY GIFTED MAGNET CRITERION
To qualify for a highly gifted school/center, students
must meet the criterion of 99.9% on an intellectual assessment administered by the
LAUSD Psychological Services Branch. Assessment results may be accepted from another
public school district when it is determined that LAUSD eligibility criteria are
met.
The Gifted/Talented Programs Office must receive
identification of highly gifted status before Friday, December 18, 2009 at 5:00
p.m. Upon receipt of the application, the Office of Student Integration
Services will automatically check District records for eligibility.
PARENTS SHOULD CONFIRM WITH THE CURRENT SCHOOL PRINCIPAL THAT THEIR CHILD QUALIFIES
FOR A GIFTED/HIGH ABILITY OR HIGHLY GIFTED MAGNET BEFORE SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION.
APPLICANTS WHO DO NOT MEET THE CRITERIA, AS STATED ABOVE, WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE
SELECTION PROCESS.

NOTE: The Los Angeles Unified School District
provides programs for gifted/talented students in local resident schools and
in schools offering advanced studies programs, as well as in Magnets. In addition,
some of the schools, including gifted/high ability Magnets, also provide special
programs for highly gifted students. Please call the school or Magnet Center
in which you are interested for further information on its gifted programs.
