SECTION A-1: REQUIRED CRITERIA FOR THE GIFTED MAGNET PROGRAM

WHEN APPLYING TO A GIFTED MAGNET CENTER, APPLICANTS MUST:
  1. Be identified as gifted in the Intellectual, High Achievement or Specific Academic Ability Category OR be verified as eligible to apply by the school of attendance. Refer to Gifted Magnet Criteria below.
  2. If not identified as gifted, be re-verified if student is a matriculating 5th, 6th or 8th grade applicant who has completed elementary or middle school. The current school of attendance is required to re-verify the student to determine eligibility to continue in a Gifted Magnet program.
  3. Adhere to the recommendation submitted and signed by the principal of the current school of attendance.
  4. Reside within the LAUSD boundaries at the time of application and while participating in the Magnet program.

<strong>Gifted Magnet Criteria</strong>

ALL LAUSD AND NON-LAUSD APPLICANTS SELECTING A GIFTED MAGNET MUST BE VERIFIED AS MEETING one of the following criteria prior to Thursday, November 9, 2017, at 5:00 p.m.

Gifted Magnet Centers offer enriched interdisciplinary academic environments that are exciting, challenging and encourage students to use creative/critical thinking skills. Gifted Magnets serve students who demonstrate ability or strong potential to work two years above grade level in academic subjects, and meet ONE of the criteria listed below.

  1. Identified as gifted by an LAUSD designated GATE psychologist in the Intellectual, High Achievement or Specific Academic Ability Category.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to meet ALL FOUR of these critical thinking and problem solving skills in their primary language:
    • Explain meanings or relationships among facts, information or concepts that demonstrate depth and complexity.
    • Formulate new ideas or solutions and elaborate on the information.
    • Use alternative methods in approaching new or unfamiliar mathematical problems.
    • Use extensive vocabulary easily and accurately to express creative ideas.
    Your child’s teacher and the principal of the school your child is currently attending will determine if your child meets all four critical thinking and problem solving skills and demonstrates ability or strong potential to work two years above grade level in academic subjects. 
  3. Scored in the Standard Exceeded range on the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) or have a national percentile score of 85 or above on a District-approved standardized norm referenced test in both total reading and total math for the most recent year.
SECTION A-2: REQUIRED CRITERIA FOR THE HIGHLY GIFTED MAGNET PROGRAM

WHEN APPLYING TO A HIGHLY GIFTED MAGNET CENTER, APPLICANTS MUST:
  1. Meet the criterion of 99.9% on an Intellectual Ability assessment administered by an LAUSD designated GATE psychologist.
  2. Students who receive a 99.5%–99.8% are considered highly gifted applicable and may also apply to a Highly Gifted Magnet (see page 28). (Note: Students who are eligible in the High Achievement Ability Category based on OLSAT scores are not eligible for Highly Gifted Magnet Centers). For a student to be eligible for a Highly Gifted Magnet, the student must be assessed and identified before Thursday, November 9, 2017, at 5:00 p.m. PARENTS/GUARDIANS MAY CONTACT THE GIFTED/TALENTED PROGRAMS OFFICE AT (213) 241-8361 TO VERIFY IF THE STUDENT QUALIFIES TO APPLY TO A HIGHLY GIFTED MAGNET PROGRAM.
  3. Reside within the LAUSD boundaries at the time of application and while participating in the Magnet program.
SECTION B: LAUSD APPLICANTS (CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN AN LAUSD SCHOOL)

  1. Submit a Choices Application
    1. Apply on-line at eChoices.lausd.net OR
    2. Complete and submit a paper Choices Application.  Choices brochures/applications are available at all LAUSD schools, Local District Offices, LAUSD Headquarters, Parent and Community Services Branch (PCS) and Los Angeles City Libraries.

    Verification forms are NOT required for the students currently enrolled in an LAUSD school. Upon receipt of the Magnet application, the District will automatically verify eligibility through District school records. Applicants must meet the required program-specific criterion/criteria listed above in Sections A-1 (Gifted Magnet) or A-2 (Highly Gifted Magnet). Your choice of a Gifted OR Highly Gifted Magnet Program will be removed from the selection process if the eligibility criterion/criteria are not met.
     
SECTION C: NON-LAUSD, INDEPENDENT CHARTER AND PRIVATE SCHOOL APPLICANTS

IT IS THE PARENT/GUARDIAN'S RESPONSIBILITY TO OBTAIN THE VERIFICATION FOR GIFTED OR HIGHLY GIFTED MAGNET CENTERS FORM.

All non-LAUSD, private school and independent charter school students, applying to a Gifted OR Highly Gifted Magnet program, must follow the procedures below by Thursday, November 9, 2017, at 5:00 p.m.

Parents/Guardians of students who are attending non-LAUSD, independent charter and private schools, and were previously identified as gifted by LAUSD, may contact the Gifted/Talented Programs office at (213) 241-8361 to check LAUSD records for eligibility.
  1. Submit a Choices Application
    1. Apply on-line at eChoices.lausd.net OR
    2. Complete and submit a paper Choices Application.  Choices brochures/applications are available at all LAUSD schools, Local District Offices, LAUSD Headquarters, Parent and Community Services Branch (PCS) and Los Angeles City Libraries.
  2. Submit a signed Verification for Gifted or Highly Gifted Magnet Centers form from the current school of attendance.
    1. If applying on-line, download and print the self-populated, Verification for Gifted or Highly Gifted Magnet Centers form. Click here to download the form.  Sign, date and mail it to the current school of attendance (include page 2). OR
    2. Contact Student Integration Services at (213) 241-6572 to have the Verification for Gifted or Highly Gifted Magnet Centers form forwarded to the child’s current school. Have school name, address and phone number ready. 
    The completed verification form can be mailed or hand delivered to: Student Integration Services, 333 S. Beaudry Avenue, 25th Floor, Los Angeles, CA 90017.
  3. Parents/Guardians:
    1. Must give the child’s current school permission to release the required information.
    2. Must verify that the principal of the child’s current school of attendance completes all the necessary items on the Verification for Gifted or Highly Gifted Magnet Centers form, signs and returns it in a sealed official school envelope with the Principal's signature across the sealed side.
    3. Must confirm the receipt of the Verification for Gifted or Highly Gifted Magnet Centers form with the Student Integration Services Office prior to the deadline of Thursday, November 9, 2017, at 5:00 p.m. Your choice of a Gifted OR Highly Gifted Magnet Program will be removed from the selection process if the eligibility criteria are not met. Late verification forms will not be accepted.
    4. Do not include the Verification for Gifted or Highly Gifted Magnet Centers form with the application. The Student Integration Services Office will not notify parent of receipt of the verification form.

NOTE: The Los Angeles Unified School District provides programs for gifted/talented students in local resident schools as well as in Magnets. In addition, some District schools, including Gifted Magnets, also provide special programs for highly gifted students. Please call the school or Magnet center in which you are interested for further information on its gifted programs.
