Other LAUSD Program Options

The following are other educational programs offered by LAUSD. These programs are not part of the Student Integration programs and have a separate application process. The Choices Brochure cannot be used to apply for these programs. Please see the descriptions below. If you are interested in applying to these programs you must use the contact information listed under each program.

School For Advanced Studies (SAS)

  • District programs designed for students identified as gifted, highly gifted, and/or students who demonstrate superior academic achievement with appropriate documentation.
  • Designed to serve students by assessing their academic needs and providing instruction which meet and exceed state content standards as described in the California Education Code.
  • Applications for Schools for Advanced Studies are available at Educational Service Center Schools beginning in March, 2015 (date subject to change).

  • District transportation is NOT available.

  Charter Schools
  • Charters are public schools of choice with a rigorous standards based and standards-aligned curriculum authorized by LAUSD and approved by the State of California. For the 2014-2015 school year there will be about 270 charter schools in LAUSD.
  • Schools are overseen by the Charter Schools Division. For information, including a directory of schools, please call (213) 241-0399 or visit http://charterschools.lausd.net.
  • To enroll, please contact the school directly. Please note that if enrollment interest exceeds the number of seats available during their enrollment period, the school will have a random public lottery to determine enrollment. Please contact each school for a copy of their admissions and lottery procedures. Otherwise, enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • District transportation is NOT available.
  Open Enrollment
  • Schools with designated open enrollment available seats will accept applications starting the first week of May. In schools where applications exceed the declared number of open enrollment seats, a random drawing will be held in late May or early June.
  • Coordinated by School Management Services Office as an alternative enrollment option to resident schools.
  • Check the website, http://qualityschools.lausd.net, or go to any LAUSD school in May for a list of participating schools, Open Enrollment Application and the number of open enrollment seats at each school, or call School Management Services at (213) 241-8044 in May.

  • District transportation is NOT available.
  Zones of Choice
  • Zones of Choice are geographic areas comprised of multiple small school options that offer current students living in an attendance boundary the opportunity to select and rank their high school options. All school options offer college preparatory curriculm, A-G standards-based instruction, and preparation for college and careers.
  • Eligibility to attend a Zone of Choice school is based on home address and enrollment capacity.
  • Zone of Choice options offer students an opportunity to pursue their individual academic interests.

  Romero Open Enrollment Act
  • The Romero Open Enrollment Act became effective on April 14, 2010. This Act requires that the State Department of Education create an open enrollment list of 1,000 schools State-wide with the lowest Academic Performance Index (API) scores. A new list for the 2015–16 school year will be available in the fall of 2014 and school districts will be notified if one or more of their schools is on the new list. Parents/guardians whose children attend one of the schools on this list have the option to enroll their children in another LAUSD school or a school outside of the District. The application period is from November 1, 2014 through January 1, 2015 for enrollment in the 2015-2016 school year. Applicants interested in enrollment outside of LAUSD must contact the outside District regarding their enrollment procedures.
