Other LAUSD Program Options
You cannot apply for these programs through CHOICES.
School For Advanced Studies (SAS)
- District programs designed for students identified as gifted, highly gifted, and/or
students who demonstrate superior academic achievement with appropriate documentation.
- Designed to serve students by assessing their academic needs and providing instruction
which meet and exceed state content standards as described in the California Education
Code.
- Applications for Schools for Advanced Studies are available at Educational Service
Center Schools beginning April, 2013.

Charter Schools
- Charters are public schools of choice with a rigorous standards based and standards-aligned
curriculum authorized by LAUSD and approved by the State of California. Currently,
there are 198 charter schools in LAUSD.
- Schools are overseen by the Charter Schools Division. For information, including
a directory of schools, please call (213) 241-0399 or visit http://charterschools.lausd.net.

Open Enrollment
- Schools with designated open enrollment available seats will accept applications
starting the first week of May. In schools where applications exceed the declared
number of open enrollment seats, a random drawing will be held in late May or early
June.
- Coordinated by School Management Services Office as an alternative enrollment option
to resident schools.
- Check the website, www.lausd.net,
or go to any LAUSD school in May for a list of participating schools, Open Enrollment
Application and the number of open enrollment seats at each school, or call School
Management Services at (213) 241-8044 in May.

Local Zones of Choice
- Zones of Choice are geographic areas with multiple school campuses that offer current
8th grade students living in an attendance boundary the opportunity to select and
rank their high school options.
- Eligibility to attend a Zone of Choice school is based on home address and enrollment
capacity.
- Zone of Choice options offer students an opportunity to pursue their individual
academic interests.
