The following are other educational programs offered by LAUSD. These programs are not part of the Student Integration programs and have a separate application process. The Choices Brochure cannot be used to apply for these programs. Please see the descriptions below. School For Advanced Studies (SAS)

  • The SAS program supports the District's commitment to strengthen support for students identified as gifted, highly gifted, and students who demonstrate superior academic achievement with appropriate documentation (K-12).
  • Schools for Advanced Studies serve as District demonstration sites for innovative and research-based differentiated curriculum and instruction for gifted/high ability learners and students identified as gifted in multiple categories.
  • SAS applicants must meet one of the qualifying criteria to be eligible for selection; detailed criteria are detailed on page 2 of the application and available at achieve.lausd.net/gate. (Select GATE Program Options and Schools for Advanced Studies.)
  • SAS student permit applications are available at achieve.lausd.net/gate. net/gate or at SAS school sites during the student application period (spring 2017; dates and procedure subject to change).
  • The SAS student permit application is only for students who reside outside of the SAS site’s residential boundaries. Qualified resident students receive priority placement and are not required to submit an application.
  • The SAS student permit application does not apply to affiliated charter schools with the SAS designation. Enrollment at affiliated charter schools must be conducted in accordance with the legal State and District requirements established for charter schools. Contact the affiliated charter school directly for enrollment information.

  Romero Open Enrollment Act
  • The Romero Open Enrollment Act became effective on April 14, 2010. This Act requires that the State Department of Education create an open enrollment list of 1,000 schools State-wide with the lowest Academic Performance Index (API) scores. Parents/guardians whose children attend one of the schools on this list have the option to apply to another LAUSD school or a school outside of the district. The application period is from November through January for enrollment the following school year, based on the release of school names from the California Department of Education (CDE). Due to the transition to the new California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress system, with the absence of a 2015 API score, the CDE could not produce an Open Enrollment (Romero/ SBX 5 4) list for the 2016–17 school year. The last available list is posted on the CDE website and is based on the assessment results from the 2013 California Standards Tests. If a new list is generated by the CDE for the 2017-2018 school year, parents of students attending the identified schools will be notified upon release of the list. Applicants interested in enrollment outside of LAUSD must contact the outside district regarding their application and enrollment procedures for Romero Open Enrollment and provide a copy of Romero notification letter from their school of residence.
  • For additional information regarding the application process, please go to the LAUSD website (home.lausd.net) under Families and click on Parents: Got Questions? or apply at apply.lausd.net or call (213) 241-3844.
